ARTIST STATEMENT

I’m working on a concept for the concept,
an explication of cause and effect.
You want clarity, an agenda,
definition -- so I’m working on a concept
for the concept that is looming and wordless
but also utterly concrete: It’s matter
and it matters, this vibrato of sentience.
Solipsistic?  Sometimes, perhaps.
Here is what I do:
Slather, paste, layer, replace
the hours clicking like stilettos, wet steps
in alleys -- I don’t hear at all, but then
what I see is what I didn’t see before.
It moves from turquoise to ivory
to a newborn waxy green --
I rub it all lilac, start over, write
lines I can hardly read in charcoal
and gesso over it all.
Painting begins as a hole in my wall.
